No trip to any plantation in USA will be complete if you have not visited Destrehan plantation. It has spellbound visitors because of the plantation’s brush with history, and a host of legendary people.

It gives an insight of the rich heritage. It has amazed tourists since decades because of the aura and elegance it displays in terms of sophistication, culture, heritage and architecture. Established in the year 1787, this plantation has been the “oldest documented plantation home in Mississippi Valley”.

Visitors can witness the original document here signed by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, which is popularly known as the “Jefferson Document”. According to this document only few people were assigned to the Orleans Territorial Council. One of those few honorable members was the owner of the Destrehan Plantation –Jean Noel Destrehan. The Council is a body formed to aid the cultural transition of the Orleans Territory into an US administrative territory.

Picture 1 - Destrehan Plantation

Destrehan Plantation Location

Destrehan Plantation is located near Destrehan, St. Charles Parish and Louisiana.

Destrehan Plantation Directions

Destrehan Plantation is located half mile away from the Destrehan Bridge on Highway 48 (River Road). The Plantation is 8 miles away from the New Orleans International Airport.

Destrehan Plantation History

The Destrehan Plantation was constructed in the year 1787 by Charles Paquet and was bought by indigo planter Robert Antointe Robin DeLogny. It took three years to build the house. The name “Louisiana” for the town and the plantation has come from DeLogny’s famous son-in-law Jean Noel Destrehan who belonged to the family of treasurer of the French colony of Louisiana. Jean Noel Destrehan inherited the property soon after DeLogny’s death. He was an able administrator for he managed and also expanded the property extensively. DeLogny had planted indigo but Destrehan changed it to Sugar cane. Slowly the plantation grew leaps and bounds in terms of sugarcane production in the area. The slaves at the Destrehan Plantation were treated well.

In the year 1840, The Destrehan Plantation was renovated and remodeled in the lines of Greek Revival Style. The Destrehan Family lived lavishly and with grace.

In the year 1864, Union Army seized the plantation and established the Rost Home Colony where the slaves who were freed learned different kinds of trades.

It passed on to the hands of the Destrehan Family for years and suffered a major setback in the year 1910 when private ownership ended and the plantation was sold off to Destrehan Planting and Manufacturing Company. Ownership changed several hands after 1910 but none could bring back the glory with which the Destrehan Plantation stood for about 160 years. Unfortunately, the legacy which this plantation boasts of had been forgotten and it was ransacked and attacked by people when it was left abandoned for over 12 years (1958-1970). The Plantation was plundered in search of treasures which were said to be hidden in the walls. It was left to rot for 12 long years.

Picture 2 - Destrehan Plantation Image

Ultimately, Destrehan Plantation had a savior in some concerned local citizens who contacted Amoco. Eventually, The River Road Historical Society came into being, which is a non-profit organization.
In the year 1971, the house got remodeled with building up a new roof and four acres of ground which fell into the parlance of the Society. Since then the continuous efforts of the Society have concentrated on the restoration of the honor with which once the Plantation held its head high.

Destrehan Plantation is two storied house with open galleries on three sides and two storey wings which are detached from the main building by side galleries. The roof is double pitched and it spells the architectural grandeur of those times. It has actually three houses in one and is one of the oldest and finest white pillared mansions in Orleans. Among the famous buildings of this plantation is the Mule Barn which is a house for many activities like Weddings and other events which the plantation hosts.

Destrehan Plantation Exhibits and Activities

Several historical demonstrations and many tours are conducted in the plantation. Activities like Open Hearth Cooking, Wood Crafting, African American Herbal Remedies, Indigo Dyeing, Candle making and also Sugar Cane processing are conducted in here. Glimpses of the past can be seen while these historical demonstrations are conducted.

As for tour, an Interpreter guides the visitors to enhance their trip by showcasing the rich legacy that was a part of the area for over a century. The plantation also holds Weddings, Dinner Parties and Group Lunches.

Picture 3 - Destrehan Plantation Picture

Is Destrehan Plantation Haunted?

There is a rumor that has been going around that the Plantation is haunted by spirits. The staff of The River Road Historical claimed to have encountered the spirits of the owners. The spirits were reportedly seen by the visitors too. Some of the visitors have found that their photographs were little blurred or a hazy appearance in them which did not exist when the photograph was clicked.

No harm has been caused to any visitor or the staff. There are some people who have refuted the claims of the existence of supernatural powers.

Louisiana Tech University History

Louisiana Tech University was established in the year 1894 on the grounds of approval granted by the General Assembly of Louisiana. Colonel Arthur T. Prescott was voted as the very first president of the institution.

Today it seems almost surreal to even imagine that the institution had started on a 20 acre land now rests on a vast campus. However it is a fact that in the beginning the institution comprised of a single brick building with exactly eight classrooms, two offices, an auditorium and a chemical laboratory. There were 6 faulty members teaching a student body comprising of 202 students when the institution began its first session in the year of 1895.

Harry Howard had the esteem of being the first fellow graduate to have passed out from the institution in 1987.

Over the years the institution witnessed changes in many spheres. The courses and programs were altered and so were admission procedures and requirements that got sterner as time passed. In 1921 the school’s name was changed from Louisiana Industrial Institute to Louisiana Polytechnic Institute.

The infrastructural growth of the institution was aggravated in 1939-1940 after the former main building burnt.

During the 25 years reign of Jay Taylor as 12th President of the institution, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute gradually transformed into what we know to be the Louisiana Tech University.

In 1992 the university was declared to be a ‘selective admissions’ university. Latest records as of May, 2011 reveal that Louisiana Tech University to have granted more than 91,300 degrees.

Campus

The Louisiana Tech University’s campus in its sprawling entirety is comprised of the Main Campus, South Campus, Enterprise Campus and Barksdale Campus.

The main campus area is situated in Ruston, Louisiana

The future project of Enterprise Campus is to be situated east of Homer Street. This 50 acre campus plot will border or surround that portion of the Main Campus that is by far the oldest.

On the mere southeast portion of the main campus, you will find the 80 acre South Campus. The Department of Agricultural Studies, Equine Center, School of Forestry, Center for Rural Development and Tech Farm are encompassed within the South Campus.

Barksdale Campus happens to be situated at the Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City at Louisiana. Non-military citizens are also allowed to participate in the classes being offered even though the sole focus of this campus caters to teaching and educating Air Force staff or personnel.

The university functions in alignment with the Air Force Department thereby offering postsecondary education courses of study. These programs so featured have specially been designed, keeping in mind the requirements of Air Force personnel department.

Apart from the Main Campus, the university also owns 474 acre land in the South Campus, 603 acre forest land at Winn, Natchitoches as well as Union Parish, 167 acre of farmland westward from the Main Campus and a Flight Operation Center in Ruston Municipal Airport.
Many more interesting species of exotic animals and wonderful birds are housed in Audubon Zoo. Much more fun and excitement, with so much knowledge from all that to gain awaits at Audubon Zoo.

Audubon Zoo History

Audubon Zoo’s site was previously a city park. A bird aviary was always there since 1914. In 1920’s the Sea Lion Pool and Reptile Exhibit was constructed. The zoo was expanded with an amount of a $400,000 during the time of the Great Depression. This is when the Monkey Hill was also built.

Near 1970’s the zoo was in such a condition that studies advised that it should be shut down for its inappropriate animal shelters. The City government, local businessmen and local people vouched for the zoo’s existence and fund was raised good enough in amount to rebuilt and totally renovate the zoo and bring it to a new avatar. Expansion was also done and the 14acres to 50acres, and soon towards the end of 1970’s Audubon Zoo became one of the country’s best zoos.

During the Hurricane Katrina in 2005 the zoo suffered minor damages and provided shelter to all the staff in the higher ground-level built reptile exhibit. Though the after calamity period was tough enough for the zoo to survive due to shortage of power supply, food and many other amenities. But somehow the zoo managed to survive the crisis and reopened on the same year on Thanksgiving weekend.

The oldest plantation of the United States, the Laura Plantation is located at the Mississippi river’s western bank in St. James Parish, Louisiana. The nearest airport to the Laura plantation is the International Airport New Orleans. Laura plantation is a historic plantation set up in 1805 and is one amongst the 15 plantation with such a complete Creole structure. This plantation also stands out amongst the other historic plantation because it was the only sugar plantation which was run by women for almost 200 years. This plantation started with just few handfuls of slaves which later expanded and gradually had 185 slaves working for the plantation and some of the descendants of those slaves still live near the plantation.

Laura Plantation History

The history of this plantation dates back to the early 1700’s when the nomadic group was wandering through the banks of Mississippi river. Each year the Amerindian nomads wandered in search of a good and fertile land, and they found the western bank of the Mississippi river a suitable land and hence the Tabiscania, meaning long river view village was established.

In the year 1804, the Big house was built in the plantation along with several other Indian huts for the slaves in the midst of the sugarcane field. The year following that, the sugar plantation started functioning with just seven slaves of who six were West African and an Amerindian. The plantation flourished and gradually expanded and by the time civil war broke out, the plantation had already 185 slaves working under them.

Since 1750’s there were attempts by the Frenchmen to take control of the plantation but were unsuccessful. However, the land was finally granted to a French person named Guillaume Duparc, who was a veteran during the American Revolution. Mr. Thomas Jefferson helped him to acquire the land.

Guillaume Duparc dies soon after hence could not run the plantation for very long leaving the responsibility of the plantation to the women of his family. The sugar plantation was then run by them. And the fact is that the plantation was run by women of that family for almost 200 years. Laura, the great granddaughter of Duparc, finally sold off the plantation to Florian Waguespack family in 1891. They were the Creoles of German descents.

Elizabeth, who was the daughter of Duparc, had two children. The plantation was then divided between the two of her children. Laura’s father got the half of the plantation with the house but the mill was on the other half of the plantation. He had to construct a new mill. After the completion of the mill, he decided to throw a party. Laura was 13 years old then. Her father had invited guest for the party including Laura’s friends and cousins. He had asked his guest to suggest a name for the mill, it was then that the name Laura’s mill was suggested by one of Laura’s Friend and cousin; hence the plantation was named Laura Plantation.

Laura Plantation Tour

This historic plantation which is located at the bank of Mississippi river is surrounded by a sugarcane field. The tour starts with the Big House which was built in 1805, it has a raised basement, has office for men and women. As the visitors enter the plantation, one can imagine the life at that period of time. The plantation itself signifies the development of the earlier antebellum period and its course into the 20th century of the sugarcane plantation. The plantation which had 185 slaves working for the plantation had a rare collection of building with a Big House and several other small quarters for the slaves. A visit to this plantation makes you go back to the past. In 1891 when Laura who was the heir of the plantation sold off the plantation to A. Florian Waguespack she sold it off on a condition that the name of the plantation and of the House would continue to be named Laura.

The Big House in the Laura Plantation had been constructed in a federal style. As you stand in front of the House one can see the raised basement made of bricks and the upper floor of the house has post with bricks between them. The interior of the house is of federal style, with the woodwork and the Norman roof truss. The Laura house that we see in the plantation with the federal style, is one amongst the very few such examples of the federal style these days. In fact the Greek revival woodwork has survived more than the federal style.

The Norman roof truss were very common in every Creole houses, but these days we hardly get to see such examples. In earlier days the central and the southern part of Louisiana were mainly inhabited by the Creole residences. Nowadays, outside the New Orleans, there are hardly 300 to 400 examples of these buildings remain; of this majority of the houses are small so the distinct group of the Creole style is getting extinct. Few which still remain includes the main house Laura. There are hardly 15 working plantation in the state and Laura plantation is one of them which reminds the visitors of the process through which it grew from the antebellum period to the 20th century.
