Acadian Village

Acadian Village in Lafayette, Louisiana, is a time captivating heritage estate that is being cared by the development challenged people of Lafayette and the project itself takes care of the age old authentic Cajun culture. The heritage project is a noble and practical initiative by Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC).

The project idea was brain child of Glen Conrad, Bob Lowe, and Dr. Norman Heard. The village envelops a total area of 32acres. The houses inside the project rim were previously long before by the people who brought along with them the Cajun culture. The houses were abandoned for many years and were used as just storages. LARC officials took charge of contacting the owners’ clans of those houses and get consent to bring the houses within this extremely noble project. To add on to the heritage project, a new waterway was traversed through the village, altering a huge area of 10acres of cultivation land.

Acadian Village History

The village Acadian was officially decided to develop into a heritage village during sometime around the beginning of 1970’s. The whole purpose of developing the heritage village was improvising tourism in Lafayette, and employing those who suffered some development difficulty. The idea also sparked the conservation of the originality and heritage of the village Acadian.

Families of the abandoned houses at the village agreed to the settlement with the officials for the initiative. Works began to re-mould the entire estate to give it the original essence of Cajun culture.

Acadian Village Homes

  • Bernard’s House :  The oldest house of the village is the Bernard’s House.
  • Art Gallery :  Dr. Hypolite Salles’ house has been turned into the art gallery of the village.
  • Doctor’s Museum :  The Doctor’s Museum also belonged to him where he practiced. Billeaud Sugar Plantation is adorned by the Billeaud house.
  • Blacksmith Shop :  Charles Goulas was the blacksmith of the village and his shop is restored and maintained as the Blacksmith Shop with all his work tools.
  • Castile House :  The Castille House took over a year to be completed and is built in European style. Dorsene Castille, and European owned this house.
  • LeBlanc House :  Acadian Senator Dudley J. LeBlanc’s birthplace is conserved as the LeBlanc House.
  • New Hope Chapel :  A chapel, depicting a typical chapel of 1850’s, has been raised and conserved as the New Hope Chapel.
  • St. John House :  St. John House derived its name from the street’s name where it is situated in downtown Lafayette. This house was donated by a dentist.
  • Thibodeaux House :  The Thibodeaux House is a remarkable construction for its security planning. It has been known that the house had only one entrance to the daughters’ room, through the parents’ room, and the boys’ room was in the attic.
  • T-Paul’s House :  Duhons root back to French origin. T-Paul’s House is built in memories of Paul Duhon by his brother. Paul was popularly known as t-Paul.

Noel Acadien au Village
