Louisiana Tech University History
Louisiana Tech University was established in the year 1894 on the grounds of approval granted by the General Assembly of Louisiana. Colonel Arthur T. Prescott was voted as the very first president of the institution.
Today it seems almost surreal to even imagine that the institution had started on a 20 acre land now rests on a vast campus. However it is a fact that in the beginning the institution comprised of a single brick building with exactly eight classrooms, two offices, an auditorium and a chemical laboratory. There were 6 faulty members teaching a student body comprising of 202 students when the institution began its first session in the year of 1895.
Harry Howard had the esteem of being the first fellow graduate to have passed out from the institution in 1987.
Over the years the institution witnessed changes in many spheres. The courses and programs were altered and so were admission procedures and requirements that got sterner as time passed. In 1921 the school’s name was changed from Louisiana Industrial Institute to Louisiana Polytechnic Institute.
The infrastructural growth of the institution was aggravated in 1939-1940 after the former main building burnt.
During the 25 years reign of Jay Taylor as 12th President of the institution, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute gradually transformed into what we know to be the Louisiana Tech University.
In 1992 the university was declared to be a ‘selective admissions’ university. Latest records as of May, 2011 reveal that Louisiana Tech University to have granted more than 91,300 degrees.
The Louisiana Tech University’s campus in its sprawling entirety is comprised of the Main Campus, South Campus, Enterprise Campus and Barksdale Campus.
The main campus area is situated in Ruston, Louisiana
The future project of Enterprise Campus is to be situated east of Homer Street. This 50 acre campus plot will border or surround that portion of the Main Campus that is by far the oldest.
On the mere southeast portion of the main campus, you will find the 80 acre South Campus. The Department of Agricultural Studies, Equine Center, School of Forestry, Center for Rural Development and Tech Farm are encompassed within the South Campus.
Barksdale Campus happens to be situated at the Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City at Louisiana. Non-military citizens are also allowed to participate in the classes being offered even though the sole focus of this campus caters to teaching and educating Air Force staff or personnel.
The university functions in alignment with the Air Force Department thereby offering postsecondary education courses of study. These programs so featured have specially been designed, keeping in mind the requirements of Air Force personnel department.
Apart from the Main Campus, the university also owns 474 acre land in the South Campus, 603 acre forest land at Winn, Natchitoches as well as Union Parish, 167 acre of farmland westward from the Main Campus and a Flight Operation Center in Ruston Municipal Airport. The 30 acre land situated in Shreveport and 44 acres of golf course at Lincoln Parish also belongs to the Louisiana Tech University.

Louisiana Tech University Athletics
The Louisiana Tech University takes pride in its athletics teams that have represented the university in the Western Athletic Conference since the year of 2001. The university is home to a total of fifteen athletic teams; 7 men’s teams and 9 women’s teams.
The on- campus athletic facilities have witnessed major improvements in the past few years with several new infrastructural additions and renovations. Lady Techsters Soccer Field, Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex, Jim Mize Track and Field Complex and Lambright Bowling Alley happen to be among the new facilities that have been added recently to the campus. Apart from this several renovation plans have also been successfully accomplished.
Red and blue colors represent the Bulldogs or the men’s teams while red and Columbia blue stand for the women’s team that is also known as Lady Techsters.
The legendary football team of the university was winner of three National Championships, participation in 5 Division I bowl games and earned 24 conference titles in its existence of 110 years. This team has been home to football personalities like Fred Dean, Willie Roaf, Ryan Moats, Tim Rattay and many others including Pro Football hall of Fame T. Bradshaw. The team has been contending as an NCAA Division I representing the institution as Football Bowl Subdivision, in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Bulldog’s men’s Basketball team has 19 conference titles, 6 NIT shows and 6 NCAA Tournaments to their acknowledgement.
The Lady Techsters’s women’s basketball team is no less in any terms when it comes to outshining the name of the university. As such this team boasts of having won 3 national championships along with 20 conference titles and 16 conference tournaments.
The university’s Bulldog Baseball team has also made outstanding achievements by bringing home six conference titles. This team has made a total of six appearances in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Bulldogs Baseball team has many famous players.
